Pond liners offer many advantages when building a garden pond and are therefore the most commonly used sealing method:
- Flexible in use
- Easy to install
- Cost-effective
- Durable
- Easy to repair
- Safe for humans and animals
In short, pond liners are the most flexible, affordable, and practical solution for creating a custom garden pond.
Which material should I use for a pond liner?
That depends on the intended use:
- PVC liner: most commonly used (affordable, flexible)
- EPDM liner: more durable, but more expensive
- PE liner: budget alternative, but less flexible
There is no “best” liner – it depends on your budget and application.
What are the characteristics of a good pond liner?
A high-quality pond liner is:
- Cold-resistant (down to approx. -20 °C)
- Free from harmful substances
- Tear-resistant & stretchable
- Rot-resistant
- UV-resistant
How thick should a pond liner be?
The right thickness depends on the pond depth:
- Up to 70 cm depth → 0.5 mm
- Up to 160 cm depth → 1.0 mm (standard)
- Over 160 cm depth / swimming pond / koi pond → 1.5 mm
Rule of thumb: The deeper the pond, the thicker the liner.
How long does a pond liner last?
A pond liner has a lifespan of about 20–30 years, depending on:
- Material
- UV exposure
- Subsurface
- Installation
How do you calculate the correct liner size?
Width calculation:
0.5 m + depth + pond width + depth + 0.5 m
Length calculation:
0.5 m + depth + pond length + depth + 0.5 m
