That depends on the intended use:
- PVC liner: most commonly used (affordable, flexible)
- EPDM liner: more durable, but more expensive
- PE liner: a cost-effective alternative, but less flexible
There is no “best” liner – it depends on budget and application.
This is how you calculate the width of the pond liner:
0.5 m + depth + width (pond) + depth + 0.5 m
This is how you calculate the length of the pond liner:
0.5 m + depth + length (pond) + depth + 0.5 m
The optimal temperature is around 10–15 °C, as the liner is flexible at this range.
A high-quality pond liner is:
- resistant to cold (down to approx. -20 °C)
- free from harmful substances
- tear-resistant & flexible
- rot-resistant
- UV-resistant
PVC liner can easily be:
- welded using a hot air gun
- or bonded with PVC adhesive
Other liners made of PE or EPDM cannot be welded.
No, wrinkles in a pond liner are not a problem.

The right thickness depends on the pond depth:
- Up to 70 cm depth → 0.5 mm
- Up to 160 cm depth → 1.0 mm (standard)
- Over 160 cm depth / swimming pond / koi pond → 1.5 mm
The deeper the pond, the thicker the liner.
Pond liner has a lifespan of approximately 20–30 years, depending on:
- Material
- UV exposure
- Subsurface
- Installation
Pond fleece:
- Protects the liner from stones and roots, thereby increasing its durability
- The fleece is rot-proof
The type of fleece you should use depends on the ground conditions:
- 300 g/m²:
- for areas with few stones/roots
- “normal” soil
- 500 g/m²:
- for difficult, stony ground
- provides more protection
